Nepali Congress leader Krishna Prasad Sitaula on Friday said that the largest party was serious about seeking broader ownership of the constitution through amendment, before going to the local polls in consensus.The former NC general secretary said the political parties were in danger of failing to institutionalise the achievements gained so far and acknowledged the need to work together.At a press meet organised in the Capital on Friday to exchange greetings for the upcoming festivals, he said the leaders were well aware that the constitution had its weaknesses even as the statute was passed by an overwhelming majority of the people’s representatives.Health Minister Gagan Thapa, just out of a discussion with university vice-chancellors over the demands of the protesting Dr Govinda KC, also underscored the challenges the country faces in implementing the constitution.
“Nepali Congress has always taken leadership during all the major changes in the country. But, after that, we have not been able to safeguard those achievements,” said Thapa.
He urged the major forces–NC, CPN-UML and CPN (Maoist Centre)–to work together by realising the sensitivity of issues facing the nation at the moment. “It’s time we stopped worrying about who is in government and who has to play the opposition and stand together to hold all three layers of elections as envisaged by the constitution,” Thapa added.
